no AFS in Mac OS X Classic?

No, not the Finder.  I get a network volume icon on my desktop and 
the Finder can deal with it just fine once it finishes probing the 
entire Internet (well too much of it anyway) for the top-level 
window.  I'm sure I've double-clicked on stuff to open files in e.g. 
TextEdit.

I can't recall using the Classic file open dialog to get at stuff. 
(I'm on a Laptop or I'd experiment now.)  Some places to try are: 
/Volumes, and ~<yourself>/Desktop Folder.  Another thing to try is 
planting a Unix symlink, or a MacOS alias somewhere that you can see 
inside Classic.
