It does take a while, but not horribly long for me.  It does put a 
network icon on the desktop.

However even without it I can still open my root disk and see the AFS 
network icon there.  If I double-click on it then it takes "a while" 
and still opens the window.  Furthermore the AFS network icon then 
shows up on the desktop.

In other words I suspect that the finder will eventually do the 
disktool thing for you even if you don't bother with the explicit 
command line.
