If you do it the "hard" way and just build the latest versions of automake,
autoconf, and libtool from source and install them in $HOME/toolchain or
smth and then prefix your PATH with $HOME/toolchain, does it work? I find
that there is always something wrong with the standard/ports installation
on almost every OS I find, while building from scratch usually does the
trick.
