build can't find des.h

Okay, I've finally gotten it to build.  Hopefully I'll have some patches to 
contribute soon.

To return to one of my earlier questions which was not fully answered:
The autoconf stuff doesn't seem to find des.h, so I had to use a hack to tell 
the build where to find it.  I'd like to contribute a patch for autodetection 
of des.h.
I have two versions of des.h on my computer, the openssl version and the 
kth-krb4 version.  Which one is preferable?
