I rebooted and then did this:
% ls -aFl /afs
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root admin 24 Jun 6 15:50 ./
drwxrwxr-t 41 root admin 1350 Aug 1 09:28 ../
% ls -aFl / | grep afs
drwxr-xr-x 2 root admin 24 Jun 6 15:50 afs/
%
% mount
/dev/disk1s6 on / (local)
devfs on /dev (local)
fdesc on /dev (union)
<volfs> on /.vol (read-only)
/dev/disk1s7 on /Volumes/Iphicles (local)
automount -fstab [293] on /Network/Servers (automounted)
automount -static [293] on /automount (automounted)
%
% ps ax|grep arlad
170 ?? Ss 0:01.72 /usr/arla/libexec/arlad -D --fake-stat
367 std S+ 0:00.00 grep arlad

OK, I didn't know what I was doing. I'll see if I can figure out how
