Ah ha! A call to pam_setcred, like:

        pam_error = pam_setcred( pamh, PAM_ESTABLISH_CRED | PAM_SILENT );

needs to be made just before pam_end to get the pam version to work. This
allows samba to aquire the necessary tokens.
