file name too long

I sometimes see this when I follow a symbolic link:

%cd ~/arc
/afs/informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/home/sperber/arc: File name too long.
%ll ~/arc
lrwxr-xr-x  1 sperber  WSIstud  45 May 21  1997 /afs/informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/home/sperber/arc@ -> /afs/informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/data/archive

cd'ing to /afs/informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/data/archive in this case
works fine.  After that, I can cd to the symlink again as well, so
it's not consistent.

This is a fairly recent CVS build under FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE.
