File transfer failures?

I'm using arla-0.30 with Linux 2.2.14.  I'm getting a lot of
file transfer failures of the sort that

(1)  When I have a correct token and try to write into AFS,
     I get a permission failure message.
(2)  When I restart arlad with --debug=all (and renew the token)
     it works perfectly.

It affects only some directories, and since it works in some
directories where the token gives write access, I know the
token is OK the first time around.
