You don't need to be root to install Kerberos. Just grab, build and
install your favorite distribution in some directory where you have
write permission.

You always need libkafs/libkrbafs, even if you don't have kerberos.
You can find libkrbafs at
<http://andrew2.andrew.cmu.edu/dist/krbafs.html> and libkafs comes
included with krb4 (aka kth-krb at http://www.pdc.kth.se/kth-krb/).
