Well, I tried that snapshot. I still get hangs on reads.

As an experiment, I did a fresh install of RedHat 9, just in case there 
is still
some weirdness with glibc versions on my original system. Compiled and 
installed
heimdal, then built arla with...

./configure --with-roken=/usr/heimdal --with-krb5=/usr/heimdal 
--without-krb4 --enable-smp CFLAGS="-DCONFIG_SMP=1 
-DOPENSSL_DES_LIBDES_COMPATIBILITY -DHAVE_OPENSSL"

Installed and started arla.

They tried copying a kernel source tree (just something handy that had 
lots of
files and directories) with

cp -av /afs/<myCell>/<home>/linux <someLocalDisk>

After a bit cp hangs on a read syscall. Attaching to the process with 
strace gets
its going again.
