Okay, I've noticed for the first time in the output of configure the following 
message:

I had done
  env CFLAGS="-DOPENSSL_DES_LIBDES_COMPATIBILITY -DHAVE_OPENSSL" ./configure \
	--with-krb4=/usr/athena
