arla-cvs: missing dir entries

I've run into this odd (but reproduceable) bug when cleaning
out my mh inbox (FreeBSD 4.6.2, arla-cvs):

  orbit~/test/priv/inbox1156> ls | grep -c ^#
  1656
  orbit~/test/priv/inbox1157> ls | grep -vc ^#
  20
  orbit~/test/priv/inbox1158> \rm #*
  orbit~/test/priv/inbox1159> ls
  orbit~/test/priv/inbox1160> cd ../inbox
  orbit~/test/priv/inbox1161> ls
  1       11      13      15      17      19      3       4       6       8
  10      12      14      16      18      2       35      5       7       9
  orbit~/test/priv/inbox1162> 

Unfortunately, I don't really know where to start looking.
I've got a tar file of the above inbox directory that I
could provide, sans file contents, if that'd be useful.
