can't mount AFS?

Have a look at the startup script and try to make the steps one
by one and veryfying each one (load the kernel module, look that
it is loaded ...)

You may even try to make a /somethingelse and use that instead of
/afs (change the script accordingly). I'm still very suspicious
about the "NFS stale file handle" message.
