Did you get a corefile (in cwd or /usr/arla/cache) ?
In that care do backtrace from the core
gdb /usr/arla/bin/arlad core
bt

Funny, it seam that it work under gdb. Did you ever try to access files
under /afs (like ls -ld /afs ...)
