Too restrictive permissions?

This is not the case:
tisc at fata-856 $ type ls
ls is aliased to `ls --color=auto'
tisc at fata-857 $

I get that "Permission denied" for simple ls as well. Oh, BTW, I'm still
using ARLA 0.29.1 on this machine and it's an x86 running Linux 2.2.12.
I get the same results on an Alpha. Both machines run RedHat (6.0 the
x86 one and 6.1 the Alpha)

Where to look next?
