OK--I redid everything from scratch and I got a bit farther.  Now when I
try to run the tests I get this from fileserver:

assertion "vol->db[0] == NULL && vol->db[1] == NULL" failed: file "vld.c",
line 1132

And syslog shows:

Oct 10 18:35:56 kremlin arla[11129]: getroot: root.afs in cell
lackluster.net is missing a RO clone, not good
Oct 10 18:32:26 kremlin arla[10825]: Lost connection to
127.0.0.1/afs3-fileserver

I tried commenting the assert() out and rebuilding, but I am still unable
to run the tests.
